楚军大败而归，楚王颓然绝望。此时，被囚深宫的莫愁发现自己的饮食被人动了手脚，嬴盈准备将这个情况告知太后，被莫愁拦住。莫愁对后宫之中勾心斗角的生活已然厌倦，于是和嬴盈商量，自己欲上演一出假死的戏码，从王宫之中解脱，重获自由。嬴盈支持莫愁的计划，并帮助莫愁实现了她的目标。给莫愁下毒实为郑袖派子尚所为，就在二人费解为何莫愁还不毒发生亡时，宫中传来莫愁离世的消息。一时之间，各个心怀鬼胎的后宫嫔妃态度不一，丑态频出。胆小怕事的南后为莫愁之死即惋惜又担心楚王会怪罪。而郑袖则一番惺惺作态。太后怕莫愁之死又像当年大楚巫之死那样招来楚国灾祸，于是安排下人将莫愁尸体速速下葬，并请来巫师为其作法。
