Nach dem Tod seiner Frau Margret zieht der Architekt Martin Kelly in Chatswood, einem Vorort von Sydney, seine drei Kinder Simon, Debbie und Jenny alleine groß. Um zumindest ein wenig Entlastung zu haben, stellt er seine entfernte Verwandte Betty als Sekretärin ein. Da Betty aber nicht mit übermäßiger Intelligenz gesegnet ist, wird sie oft zur Zielscheibe von Martins Spott. Ein ebenfalls regelmäßiger Gast im Haus der Kellys ist Simons Kumpel "Nudge", der vor allem am Inhalt des familieneigenen Kühlschranks interessiert ist.
