一只叫做麦克（富山敬 配音）的猫闯入了小林夫妇的生活，这意外的访客给小林一家带来了无与伦比的幸福和快乐，也体现了人与动物之间的温情脉脉。麦克是一只再普通不过的黄狸花猫，当它与漫画家小林（梅津秀行 配音）的眼神交汇的那一刹那，属于他们的缘分就开始了。麦克有点懒，有点赖皮，有点胆小又有点装腔作势，同时，它又有着自己特殊独立的猫格和广泛的猫友圈，毫无疑问，麦克是一只好猫。在和小林一起的日子里，它不仅得到了一个温柔的主人，也和一只名叫波波的白色波斯猫（川村万梨阿 饰）组建了自己的家庭，生儿育女。动画片以日常生活为切入点，真实刻画了人与猫之间若即若离的友情和亲情，又以大胆诙谐的手法展现了一只猫的生活习性和处事原则。动画自1988年播出之后吸引了广大影迷，麦克也成为了日本人尽皆知的国民宠物。
