辛亥革命时期，爱国青年知识分子亦鸿（齐奎饰）来到木渎，带着救国的热情与愿望，结识了木渎镇的茶娘子馨（范文芳饰）、琴娘若娴（徐筠饰）、画娘知画（张琳饰）、绣娘知锦（高洋饰），以及子馨的未婚夫王大智、爱慕琴娘的纨绔子弟陈家铭（王晔饰）等一干年轻人。知锦、知画姐妹都爱上了亦鸿，迫使知画为了成全亦鸿和妹妹而远走他乡；若娴和戴思远（田雨饰）因琴结缘却不能相守，陈亦鸿更是丝毫不放弃对若娴的追求；子馨与王大智这对欢喜冤家的感情经历了一次又一次磨练，最终在战争爆发的危急时刻子馨执意嫁给了大智。众人一起经历了清政府的覆灭、维新思想的传播、打击湖匪守卫木渎、救护革命军伤员、直至抗日战争爆发，木渎众人明白这是一次民族性的战争，他们放下了各人之间的矛盾、情仇，毅然投身到抗日战争的洪流之中
