De broers Karl en Jonatan Lejon worden herenigd na hun korte leven op aarde in het land Nangijala, waar de tijd van sprookjes en kampvuren heerst. Maar het idyllische leven in Körsbärsdalen wordt bedreigd door de wrede ridder Tengil, die met de hulp van zijn vuurspuwende draak Katla de macht heeft overgenomen in Doornroosje vallei en terreur en afschuw om zich heen verspreidt. Karl en Jonatan, die vanwege hun moed de gebroeders Leeuwenhart worden genoemd, gaan de strijd aan tegen Tengil en zijn in het zwart geklede soldaten.
