Ar pirmā pasaules kara sākumu mainās kapteiņa Andreja un viņs sievas Alvīnes, viņu bērnu Kārļa, Inga, Ernesta, Elzas un Jankas patriarhālais dzīves veids, gadiem paejot darbā un retos, pieticīgos svētkos. Brīvprātīgi uz fronti aiziet Kārlis, tālajos jūras braucienos bez vēsts pazūd Ingus... Nevēlēdamies dzīvot vācu armijas okupētajā teritorijā, Zītari evakuējas uz tālo Altaja novadu. Neparasti smagie dzīves apstākļi un pēcrevolūcijas perioda krasi mainīgā politiskā situācija skar arī katru no Zītaru ģimenes locekļiem. Kad rodas iespēja atgriezties Latvijā, Andreja un Alvīnes nav vairs starp dzīvajiem. Izputējusi vecā jūrnieku ligzda un jaunie Zītari nespēj vairs saglabāt tēva mājas – visa pēc kara palikusī manta tiek izūtrupēta. Sākas jauns laika posms. Alvīnes un Andreja bērni paliek vienatnē ar savu likteni.
