Βρισκόμαστε στο 1882 και η Χρυσή Εποχή βρίσκεται σε πλήρη εξέλιξη, όταν η Μάριαν Μπρουκ, μια νεαρή ορφανή κόρη ενός στρατηγού του Νότου, μετακομίζει με τις αυστηρά συμβατικές θείες της στη Νέα Υόρκη.
