Archäologie-Professor Lasky (Donald Pleasence), der mit seinen Studenten in den Kavernen unter Rom nach weiteren verschütteten Teilen der antiken Nekropole sucht, findet nach einem Tunneleinbruch - verursacht durch eine nahe U-Bahn-Linie - ein versiegeltes Grab unbekannten Ursprungs. Einige Inschriften deuten zwar an, dass das, was dort begraben liegt, besser nicht befreit wird, doch das Grabungsteam lässt sich auch von einigen unerklärlichen Vorfällen vor dem Aufbruch der Siegel nicht aufhalten. Und so greifen die dämonischen Mächte der Unterwelt nach der Studentengruppe...
