Režisér a spoluautor scénáře Renato Castellani v zájmu historické věrnosti důkladně prostudoval Verdiho život a dobu: dílu věnoval osm let příprav. Natáčelo se po celé Itálii, v Leningradu, Londýně a Paříži; herci se počítali na stovky, kostýmy a rekvizity na tisíce.
